We’re always on the lookout for drivers that can add a few extra yards to our game. But ever since advanced composite materials caught on in the 90s, the USGA has been trying to limit just how powerful a driver can be. With that in mind, we introduce you to Callaway’s “Great Big Bertha Epic,” a driver that does both.
On sale since January 27th, the Great Big Bertha Epic is the latest example of a club that adds distance without breaking any USGA rules. This unique driver relies on Callaway’s “jailbreak technology.” Two three-gram titanium bars run parallel to each other behind the club face connecting the crown and the sole of the driver. Normally, at impact the crown, sole, and face of the driver bend, flex, and rebound. But the new “jailbreak technology” doesn’t allow the face to bend or flex. Because of this rigidity, the face becomes more efficient creating a two mile-per-hour increase in ball speed adding an average of five to seven yards to each drive.
The driver also features seventeen gram adjustable weights, four shaft weights, titanium and carbon composite materials and a head design tweaked for maximum aerodynamics. In a practical test, twelve experienced golfers who used a range of modern drivers tested out the Great Big Bertha Epic and its sibling the Great Big Bertha Epic Subzero. When using these drivers, golfers gained an extra five yards per swing with drives getting 3.5 yards closer to the target on average. Those increases were over their existing fitted modern drivers. Golfers with older drivers should see even bigger gains.
We all obsess over the next new technology and the best new equipment and that’s why Callaway’s Great Big Bertha Epic Driver is the Westlake Golf Club of the Month.
