Add More Power and Distance to Your ShotsHappy Gilmore, “grip it and rip it,” long drive competitions, being long both off the tee and with your irons is fun. But, hitting inconsistent shots is not. If you’re looking to add power and distance to your shots you need to do so in a controlled manner. Swinging hard and out of control is not a conducive strategy over the long haul. Proper adjustments to your swing can add ball speed and yardage to your shot.

Angle of Attack

The angle of attack relates to how you, simply, “attack” the golf ball. It accounts for whether your club is coming down, level, or up into the ball through impact. Combined with the loft of the club, it can impact both launch angle and spin rate.

How to Add Power and Distance

PGA Professional Mike Adams offers a simple change to your swing that can be performed at any time that will help you hit the ball further and make your par fives much more manageable. Adams suggest dropping your right foot back, which closes your swing. Doing so buys you more turn and rotation in your backswing, generating more power and club speed. It also allows the club to come more from the inside, allowing you to generate more loft on the golf ball. Generating more loft will allow you to hit the ball much farther. Adams’ adjustment allows for a positive angle of attack, meaning the club is moving upward toward the ball.
