Oaks Christian School Sophomore Qualifies For Masters’ Skills CompetitionOaks Christian School, here in Westlake Village, recently found reason to celebrate. Megan Ahmadi, a sophomore golfer at the school, just competed at the Masters. Granted, she didn’t walk through Amen Corner with Sergio Garcia or Jordan Spieth on Sunday, but she did compete in the finals of the 2017 Drive, Chip & Putt Championship – at the young age of 15.

The Drive, Chip & Putt Championship

The Drive, Chip & Putt Championship is an initiative put together by the Masters Tournament, the PGA of America, and the USGA. Considered an initiative to further golf development, it is open for all kids ages 7-15. In order for Ahmadi to reach the finals, she had to advance through local, sub-regional and regional events. Golfers are divided into age/gender divisions, resulting in Ahmadi being one of 80 finalists that competed at Augusta.

Ahmadi’s Performance

Before leaving for Augusta, Ahmadi told the Ventura County Star, “I am pretty excited to get the opportunity to go and compete against other people who are really good. I am most excited about the chance to compete at Augusta.” She continued, “I think the entire experience is going to be cool. I am looking forward to going and hopefully having success.”

Ahmadi finished tied for fifth, a considerable improvement seeing as she did not qualify for the finals in her two previous attempts. She had a very supportive crowd with her at Augusta. Her mom and dad both made the trip, as well as Westlake Golf Courses’ very own instructor George Gankas. Gankas made the trip to support both Ahmadi and another student. Tristan Gretsky, one of Ahmadi’s closest friends at Oaks Christian, also made the trip to support her.

The Oaks Christian Girls Varsity Golf Team reached the CIF team finals last year with the help of then-freshman Ahmadi. However, Ahmadi has opted to focus on academics this year and has forgone playing for the Oaks Christian team this season. Said Ahmadi, “Last year I missed 25 days of school because of golf and my grades suffered a bit. I got them back up but I decided to take this year off to really get my feet under me for school. I miss playing, but the good thing about not playing on team is I have more time to get lessons from George and work on drills by myself.”
