For Nabeel Khan, Golf Runs in the Family Nabeel Khan, a sophomore at the University of Connecticut, grew up in a household obsessed with golf. The family’s obsession paved the way for Khan to become a dominant player in college.

Since the Beginning

Khan began golfing at the age of 5. Khan’s father, Mohammad, was an avid golfer who golfed with Khan’s older siblings. This passion was passed down to each member of the family – seven of eight members of the Khan family are golfers. When growing up, the family would attempt to get in each other’s heads during the rounds they played together. But, they would also try to advise each other and provide instruction. Although they were all trying to beat one another, they were, more importantly, trying to better one another as golfers.

A Dedicated Work Ethic

If Khan isn’t traveling for a golf tournament, he will wake up at 6 a.m. to workout. After completing his workout, he attends classes and then heads straight to practice. After studying for the rest of the evening, he will finally get to bed around midnight. UConn’s head coach Dave Pezzino said via ESPN, “It scares me a little bit because he works so hard and puts so much time in, but he is such a driven individual that I’m not going to hold him back.” Mind you – Khan is a mechanical engineering major.

Khan’s swing coach, Gerry Hammond, said “He’s shown that he has the grit to climb up the ladder and compete at the higher level. It’s going to be a long process, but I am positive he is taking the right steps to the ultimate goal, which is to play on the PGA Tour.”
