The Major PGA Tournaments of the Year When you think of major golf tournaments of the year, you likely think of the four major championships. Although these are some of the most important tournaments of the year, there are other relevant and important PGA Tour events held throughout the year. It is an exciting time to be a golf fan, as the PGA Tour will soon begin its playoffs to determine a FedEx Cup winner.

The FedEx Cup

The FedEx Cup is the trophy presented to the winner of the PGA Tour. Points toward the FedEx Cup are available at each tournament. Some tournaments are more valuable than others, in terms of both FedEx Cup points and the purse available.

During the regular season, which runs from October through August, golfers on the tour can earn points, with the amounts determined by where they place. After the regular season is concluded, the top 125 point earners are invited to participate in the playoffs. Each playoff event is worth 2,000 points. After each playoff round, it is dwindled down until there are 30 players remaining headed into The Tour Championship.
