John Daly has been around since the late 80’s and has developed somewhat of a cult following over the years. He rubs traditionalists the wrong way. He smokes on the course. He’s abused alcohol. He wears loud clothing. He’s nicknamed “Wild Thing.” But lately, he’s undergoing somewhat of a career resurgence at age 51.
PGA Tour Champions Victory
A few weeks ago, Daly picked up his first win on the 50+ PGA Tour Champions circuit. Even though he bogeyed the final three holes, he hung on to beat Kenny Perry and Tommy Armour III. It was Daly’s first professional victory since the 2004 Buick Invitational. Upon winning, Daly’s friends and closest peers on the Champions Tour doused him in champagne.
Long John
Part of Daly’s bad-boy persona is the fact that he is known for his long drives. Daly has adapted a “grip it and rip it” mantra, earning him the nickname “Long John.” Currently, Daly ranks third of Tour Champions members, averaging 300.6 yards per drive. This is 11 yards further than the PGA Tour average, which is comprised of golfers much younger than Daly. In fact, Daly’s average would rank 23rd on the PGA Tour.
Reigning Senior PGA champion Rocco Mediate said, “Tell me the allure there. There’s allure. He just brings people out. He just sends it. He’s probably one of the longest, straightest drivers ever in our sport. When he’s hitting it 80 yards past you, I’m going, ‘Oh my God.’ He’s just something else.”
